If you've succumbed to the lure of the open road, a travel trailer will enhance your trip by letting you take along all the amenities of home. With so many styles to choose from, you can get a travel trailer suited to your specific needs. You can choose a conventional travel trailer, hybrid travel trailer, toy hauler or tear drop trailer - all for sale new and used from RV dealers.

Let's start with the basics. All travel trailers connect to the tow vehicle via a frame or bumper hitch. All but the smallest types come equipped with sleeping areas to accommodate up to eight people, a kitchen, a living area, and a bathroom. Because no interior space is required for a driver's cab, travel trailers boast the widest variety of floor plans. You can choose from literally dozens of interior configurations.

A conventional travel trailer generally runs from 12 to 35 feet in length. It has four aluminum sides and often an awning that runs the entire length of the doorway side. Many of today's travel trailers include "slides" or "slideouts," which are sections of wall that literally slide out from the interior, adding three feet or more of additional floor space. A hybrid travel trailer dispenses with slideouts in favor of sections of wall that fold down to create extra sleeping quarters that are enclosed by canvas and mesh. This configuration combines the open-air appeal of a tent trailer with the superior towing stability of a conventional travel trailer.

A new trend in travel trailers is called the "toy hauler," "toy box," or "toy trailer." On these trailers, the rear wall lowers to create a ramp. A portion of the interior space serves as a garage to house all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, watercraft, snowmobiles, or any other type of gear. Toy trailers represent a very hot market segment because they offer the security of indoor storage for expensive items, the safety of not having to tow a third trailer loaded with toys (in states where such a configuration is allowed), and the convenience of easy loading and extra cargo space.

The smallest of the travel trailers is the teardrop. Perhaps the original travel trailer, teardrop trailers debuted in the 1930s, and many people today enjoy their retro look. The teardrop trailer is very compact, with an asymmetrically arched roofline, which makes it taller at the front than at the back. Teardrop trailers range from seven to 17 feet in length and are just 27 to 42 inches high inside. The interior includes a mattress, with small storage cabinets above the bed. Typically, the rear of a teardrop trailer folds out to create a galley with cooktop. These miniature trailers truly are designed for bare-bones camping.

Whether you're just getting into RVing or you've decided to take a step up from tent camping, buying a new or used travel trailer will provide you with an enjoyable travel experience.
